Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford began to be attracted to acting as a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
